Dodge Neon SRT-4 (2003)

Hot little sedan pokes out 220 bhp

For less that $21,000 Chrysler can give you a little hot sedan that can take you to 60 mph in under 6 seconds - this is a fast car.

And this Dodge Neon SRT-4 looks the part with it's Viper-style grille and outrageously big rear spoiler. Bare bones it may be, but if you want a cheap go-faster car you've got to consider this one - it's cheaper than a base model Stratus.

A turbocharged engine with hot little sedan power

The turbo charged 2.4 liter engine produces 220 horsepower of mind blowing speed with 245 lbs ft of torque - at a reasonable engine speed, not wound up past 6,000 rpm. This is one powerful engine, capable of accelerating from 0-60 in a mere 5.8 seconds.

The Dodge Neon SRT-4 is more than a turbocharged and intercooled, well tuned Neon. This fast car manages to combine desirable Neon traits with desirable Spirit R/T traits, and in the process absolutely blows away many competitors.

Acceleration with this baby is very strong but also very smooth. This Neon does so without as much need for driver skill and cooperative roads. Even before the turbo starts to do much, the Dodge Neon SRT-4 takes off strongly from the start - and then the boost comes on strong in to give you and a kick in the pants. The interior is nicely done as well, with tasteful chrome accents and a visible vacuum gauge. Build quality is tight and solid.

Riding with this hot little sedan

Handling is good although the ride is compromised. As it is based on a standard sedan, the Dodge Neon SRT-4 has a nicely sized rear seat and spacious trunk. The engine is nice and loud with more of a Camaro style sound that can easily be muted with a muffler if the owner desires a sleeper.

Contributing to the impressive performance are a larger diameter throttle body, a high flow intake manifold and a muffler-less, dual outlet exhaust system with wider, 2.5 inch stainless steel tips.

The SRT-4's turbocharged power plant is coupled to a high capacity clutch and drive plate with a five-speed manual transaxle. The power train sits on unique mounts. To reduce torque steer, there are equal length half shafts.

Made to look like a hot little sedan

On the outside of this hot little sedan, performance cues start up front where a new front fascia and unique steel hood with an integral air intake that perches, ready to cool the 2.4 liter turbo engine lurking beneath. The enticing crosshair grille, inspired by the Viper, gives the SRT-4 a bolder face. Just behind the lower grille lurks a cast aluminum intercooler.

Make no mistake about it, this hot little sedan offers a lot more bang for the buck. If you're looking for a high performance fast car for under $21,000, the Dodge SRT-4 is for you.
